Bitcoin is an excellent banking option for online gamblers. It offers several benefits, such as:
All online gamblers can benefit from these features, but none more so than US gamblers – where laws have made it illegal to gamble in some states, and a major pain in the butt to process payments in all of them.
It’s for that reason we’re reviewing more hybrid (fiat + bitcoin) and bitcoin-exclusive gambling sites.
Such as Nitrogen Sports.
Nitrogen Sports is a bitcoin-exclusive sportsbook who also offers a limited casino selection and poker room.
The point of this review is to tell you all about them – the good AND the bad – so that you can ultimately decide if they’re worth your time and money in 2017.
Nitrogen Sports is owned and operated by Ideal Media Inc, who is based in Costa Rica. Nitrogen has been online since 2012.
They have a pretty solid reputation.
Reputable review site, GoonersGuide.com, says they’re the best for bitcoin sports betting.
SafestBettingSites.com says no other bitcoin site compares to them for sports betting – and that many fiat sites don’t, either.
I did find one site that blacklisted them. I don’t know much about this review site, nor do they provide any proof for the reasons they give for blacklisting them. So, I’m choosing to ignore it.
I also did a few searches for scam and scandal complaints. Most of what I found was on Reddit. I dug through several scam and complaint threads but didn’t manage to find a single one with proof. Nitrogen responded to several of the complaints, too, in attempt to help each poster out.
One poster claimed Nitrogen didn’t pay him what he was owed. But then he updated his post saying he received half, and was hoping he’d receive the rest soon. He must have, because he didn’t post again.
That’s more or less how the majority of Reddit posts went.
I did find one thread worth reading.
Apparently, Nitrogen Sports had a glitch in their system that allowed players to make a bet on matches that had already ended.
You can probably assume what happened next – a bunch of people made post-match bets that were automatic winners. Then the next day the withdrawal requests poured in.
Nitrogen did what any sensible gambling site would – they paused cash outs for a while so they could figure out where the problem was. They managed to get things back to normal (according to both players and Nitrogen Sports) within a few days, maybe a week.
There were several people on Reddit complaining about Nitrogen Sports. But – in my opinion – the real problem was all the people who took advantage of the glitch, full well knowing they were doing something wrong.
I don’t blame Nitrogen for what they did. Nor do I think they should have to eat the loss. Neither should you.
And that’s pretty much all I managed to find that was worth reporting. Which is why I’m confident in saying that Nitrogen Sports has a pretty solid reputation overall.
They say nothing about who can or cannot play here. But according to SportsbookRatings.com, there are no restrictions. Everyone is welcome.
You can contact them using:
I sent them an email to ask a question about their loyalty program. I received a response within 3 hours. They were both friendly and helpful – a nice combination, for sure.
While they used to once accept fiat currencies, now they only accept and payout in bitcoin.
There are no fees for deposits or cash outs. And other people say they’re one of the fastest paying sportsbooks out there.
Nitrogen Sports doesn’t offer a welcome bonus.
In fact, they don’t offer much of anything. You’re not going to find a welcome bonus, reload bonus or free bets here.
They do have a referral program. This is your standard affiliate program, but it’s available to everyone. You can grab a link by clicking on the affiliate tab from the backend of your account.
Nitrogen also has a couple of contests for sports bettors, as well as a newer loyalty program for poker players. I’ll cover the details for those now before we move on to their gambling options.
Nitrogen runs a couple of contests for sports bettors. Here are the details for each one.
Their Parlay Jackpot is pretty unique. You make a parlay bet, and if it has at least 2 winning plays and no more than 1 loss, push or canceled play, you can participate.
There are 3 pools. The top 7 players in each pool (21 total) with the highest parlay payouts will win a share of the prize money.
Here are the prize pools / structures:
80% of the jackpot is awarded at the end of each month. The remaining 20% is used to reseed the following month’s jackpot.
Per their rules, you can win more than one pool with a single parlay. That’s pretty cool – imagine if you won a little from each pool!
You can learn more about the Parlay Jackpot and see the current and past standings on their site.
This is another neat thing they’re doing for sports bettors.
The object is simple – be the last bettor standing by correctly picking the winner of one pro-NFL game each week.
There are multiple pools you can participate in. It looks like the biggest (only?) difference is the buy-in. There’s one freeroll, then one for .002, and then it climbs up from there until it peaks at 3 BTC.
So, no matter your budget, this is something to check out. It’s a fun way to add some excitement to your Sunday football routine.
Similar to their referral program, Nitrogen Sports will pay you to refer poker players. The program is still in its early stages, but here’s how it currently works:
They say it can take up to 10 days to process your (poker) payments.
That’s how their referral program works. But since it’s based on the loyalty level your referral achieves, it’s clear that Nitrogen Sports offers a loyalty program, too.
The details for the VIP program is tucked away in the poker section. You can find it by clicking on the ‘Play Poker’ tab and then scrolling down to the ‘Rewards’ tab.
Their rewards program currently has 5 tiers:
There are a couple more tiers, but they haven’t established them yet.
You’ll move up in levels as you play real money poker and earn points. You’ll also earn something they call Nitro.
Everyone starts at the bronze level. You’ll need to earn 100 points to reach silver, and another 900 to reach gold.
Once you reach gold you’ll start earning a 1.5x multiplier on Nitro. You can use the Nitro you earn to buy things from Nitrogen Sports’ store.
Their store currently offers two choices – bonuses or free bets.
Here are the free bets you can claim and the points each one will require:
And here are the free bet amounts you can pick up:
These free bets work the same as they do everywhere else – if your bet loses, you’re out nothing. If you win, you’ll get to keep the profit.
And that’s it – it’s slim pickings.
Some people aren’t going to like this – they got to have their bonuses and free bets. Clearly, Nitrogen isn’t a good fit for them.
If that’s your line of thinking, though, I urge you to reconsider. Bonuses and other perks tend to lock you into committing to spending thousands of dollars, leading you to think you’re getting ‘free’ money. But – in reality – you’re likely to lose everything back to the casino.
My opinion – the benefits to joining a bitcoin gambling site – the anonymity, speedy payments, a reputable site, etc. – far outweigh any bonus or cashback perks it could offer.
So, don’t let the lack of offers stop you from checking Nitrogen out.
Let’s start with Nitrogen’s sportsbook.
There are several tabs you can choose from – starting soon, in-play live and then all the individual sports and markets they cover.
You’ll also find Parlay Jackpot and NFL Survivor Pool (that I covered in the previous section) under the Nitrogen tab.
The following sections will talk about all these tabs, and more, in detail.
Nitrogen Sports covers lots of markets. Experts say they’re competitive with other US-heavy hitting sportsbooks, like 5Dimes.
That says a lot.
More specifically, though, here are the sports they cover:
But that’s just the start. When you click on one of the sports, a menu will drop down displaying all the leagues, tournaments and events they cover.
Some have more than others. I chose volleyball, for example – there were two choices – Asian Championship Women and South American Championship Men.
However, I chose soccer next and it caused my jaw to hit the floor. I didn’t count every single option – I stopped at 70. But I’m pretty sure there are more than 150, maybe more than 200.
And that’s just for soccer. You still have other (major) sports Nitrogen covers.
As for the types of bets you can make, some of your options include:
They don’t offer if bets, round robins, progressives or Asian handicaps.
But several expert bettors figure their pricing makes up for it. They say that nearly all their markets offer reduced juice – for example, -105 for NFL, NBA and NHL sides/totals, dime lines for MLB, and -107 for NCAA football and basketball totals.
It sounds like a tradeoff many bettors feel is worth making.
Nitrogen Sports covers quite a bit of ground. The games they cover include:
Here are some of the specific events, tournaments and leagues you can bet on:
There’s probably 2-3 times this. In other words, there’s a lot of e-sport markets to bet on.
They offer live esports betting, too.
In fact, when I was reviewing Nitrogen Sports, the only in-play match they were covering was a Dota 2 match between Team Liquid and Team Secret.
It looks like a decent esports section overall, and definitely a top pick for US esports bettors.
They do, indeed.
However, when I checked them out they were only covering an esports match. So, it’s hard for me to gauge how good this section is.
Other review sites say one of the (only) drawbacks to Nitrogen Sports’ sportsbook is, in fact, their live betting section, as there aren’t many markets to choose from.
Your mileage may vary.
You can find their betting limits on their rules page. The maximum payout for a single bet slip is 100 BTC. For parlays, the maximum payout on a bet slip is 50 BTC.
Of course, as bitcoin’s value fluctuates, the limit in dollars you can bet or receive will also vary.
I read one review that said they’ve noticed that Nitrogen’s limits have increased since they launched their sportsbook. Back in the day their limit was 1 BTC. But now most of the major markets have a 10 BTC limit.
Nitrogen Sports says they reserve the right to place limits on individual accounts. This leads me to believe that they may limit winners.
That said, I’ve not seen any reviews that suggest they limit winners. And I didn’t find anything about winning bettors or arbitrage in their FAQ/rules section.
Your mileage may vary.
You access the sportsbook through your browser. So long as you use one of the major browsers – Chrome, Fire Fox, Safari, IE, etc. – you should be able to access them just fine from your PC, tablet or smartphone.
I checked them out from both my laptop and phone. Their software worked well on both.
They use proprietary software. The types of games they offer include dice and card games. You won’t find any slots, video poker or live dealer games here.
You can play their games from your browser from your PC, tablet or smartphone. I checked out their blackjack game from both my laptop and iPhone – it looked solid on both.
They have a very small selection of games. You can choose from:
A few things to know about their games:
It’s sort of disappointing how small their casino is. I hope they expand in the future.
Last up is Nitrogen Sports’ poker room.
Most all-in-one sites have better sportsbook and casino products than poker and bingo products.
However, it’s possible that Nitrogen Sports breaks that mold one day – especially if they don’t bother to expand their casino beyond the handful of games they currently offer.
But, in order for that to happen, Nitrogen Sports will have to make a few improvements to their poker room. Which is arguably much harder than adding a few games to their casino.
I’ll talk about the most important improvement they can make in just a second. First, let’s look at the types of games and stakes you can play.
The games you can play include:
Their cash game limits start at .01/.02 and peak at 300/600. It depends on the game and bet type. It looks like everything is in mBTC, too.
When I checked them out, they had 17 no limit tables running. However, 8 of them were heads up tables with 1 person waiting for someone else to join. The remaining tables were a mix of 6 and 9-handed games.
The games with the most players were at the .02/.02 level. There were a couple of higher limit tables – a .05/.10 and .10/.20, but that’s it.
There wasn’t anyone at the (two) crazy holdem tables.
As for omaha, there was only one table with more than 1 person sitting at it. This one was at the .01/.02 level.
They offer both. Let’s talk about the SNGs first.
Your SNGs choices are no limit holdem or pot limit omaha. Here are the different table sizes and stakes you can choose from for each.
There’s a .2 to 1 mBTC rake, depending on the game you choose.
You can choose from regular or turbo blinds.
The same rake and blind variants apply here, too.
It looks like in both cases the 6-max variants are more popular, as there are more of those than the 10-handed options.
When I checked them out there weren’t any players signed up to play. And this was during peak times for US players, so I imagine this section is lifeless more often than not.
Now let’s talk about their tournaments.
The types of MTTs they offer include:
They offer both holdem and omaha MTTs. Buy-ins range from free to 5 to 15 mBTC.
They canceled at least one tournament the day I checked them out. I assume they canceled it because no one signed up for it. Which is sort of sad considering 2 is the min number of players for a tournament to run.
That’s an assumption, though. They didn’t give a reason on the tournament page.
But there were a couple of tournaments open for registration when I checked them out. They run plenty of freerolls, too. They offer a freeroll on the hour, every hour. The prize pool for each one is 1 mBTC.
They also run exclusive freerolls for people who complete specific challenges. These are labeled the same as the VIP levels. For example, 1000 Weekly Flops Freeroll – Gold Challenge.
Once you complete the challenge you’ll have access. It looks like the most common challenge is to see so many flops each week (500 or 1,000). This is a neat incentive to play more. And the fewer people who do it, the smaller the exclusive freerolls are – which means less variance and more monies for you.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like there’ much traffic here, so all that potential pretty much goes to waste.
If there was one thing Nitrogen Sports should improve, it’d be to get more players in here. It’s the only way they’ll ever get their poker product off the ground.
Their software was developed by Sweden-based Cubeia (who also provides games to bwin and Microgaming).
You access their poker room from your browser – it’ll open up in a new window. The same goes for your phone.
I checked out their poker room from both my laptop and phone, and it looked good on both. I was actually surprised at how good everything looked and functioned on my phone.
As for features, they cover the basics.
You can also view your hand histories, though you’re not yet able to save them to your computer. They do not offer note taking capabilities, either.
They certainly have their downsides. At least some people will think so.
The biggest one that comes to mind is their lack of offers. But I think that makes them unique. And most of the reputable sportsbooks and casinos don’t offer HUGE bonuses anyway.
Other than that, both their poker room and casino is weak. The former due to a lack of player traffic, and the latter due to a lack of games.
For that reason, it makes sense to join only for the sportsbook, then enjoy the casino and poker when possible.
And I definitely do recommend you join, as do other reputable review sites.
Nitrogen has tons of markets, lower pricing, contests, and more.
