To say that FanDuel is a company passionate about sports would be an understatement. The New York City-based company officially launched in 2009 with one goal – to change the face of fantasy sports betting with daily leagues and big cash prizes.
Fast-forward to present day and FanDuel has been hailed by leading news outlets such as the Wall Street Journal and New York Times, and has affiliations with leading networks including NBC. To date, this site has paid out over 560-million dollars in prize money. By offering players exclusive bonuses, flexible payment options, mega prizes, and a seamless user-friendly interface; FanDuel has risen in popularity among fantasy sports players and gained the attention of the likes of ESPN, Sports Illustrated and TechCrunch.
We signed up to see if these one-day leagues were as enticing as their season-long counterparts. Below we have outlined everything that FanDuel has to offer and what you can expect when you sign up with them.
Members can play for free or for real money at this site. To open an account, you must be at least 18-years or older. FanDuel is open to players in the United States. However, due to vague state laws regarding fantasy betting, residents of Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana, Montana, and Washington are not eligible for pay to play accounts. The set up-process is very quick, only requiring your first and last name, email address, and password to get started.
How do I make a deposit?
Deposits can be made using any major credit card branded with American Express, MasterCard or Visa. You can also make a deposit securely with PayPal.
Are there any banking fees?
There are no banking fees although some players may see a 3% international fee charge depending on their deposit. Should this happen, the site will refund the fee amount as long as the refund is requested within 60 days of making the deposit. This can be done by contacting customer service at [email protected]
How do I play?
To play, choose from any of the available contests from your account lobby. You will then be prompted to build your team by picking players under your salary cap. Once you are set with that, you can watch the stats filter in while the live game is played. The team with the most points will automatically be paid out the winning amount.
Each day, there is over $30,000 in league prizes for major league baseball, football, basketball, and hockey; as well as collegiate football and basketball. You will choose your opponent from the homepage or challenge your buddies to join in on the fun through email, Facebook, Twitter, or by targeting them via their screenname. Alternatively, you can allow the system to automatically match you before a game starts or create your own contest and see if anyone wishes to challenge you.
PRO TIP: Choose your own opponent to give yourself the upper hand. When you choose an opponent in a contest that is mostly composed of new players, you have the opportunity to add extra percentage points to your win rate. Over time, this can factor out to big bucks.
Can I play on my mobile device?
The website is optimized for mobile play and the company offers an app for iPhone and Android devices. This was the latest technological advancement for the company in late 2012 and then updated in 2014.
Is it legal to play at this site?
Many players wonder if wagering at sites like FanDuel is even legal. The good news is – it is. Fantasy betting was specifically excluded when the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was established. As a single-day league site, FanDuel follows the same rules as traditional fantasy betting sites.
Additionally, this is a member of The Fantasy Sports Trade Association (FSTA). The FSTA was founded in 1999 as an organization to oversee all things relating to fantasy sports betting. The association was the brainchild of several industry experts which included representatives from EA Sports, Sporting News, CDM, and Fantasy Insights. If you have a problem with FanDuel.com, you can reach out to FSTA to file a complaint via their website at , or by phone at (312) 771-7019.
Upon completing your initial registration, you will be prompted to make your first deposit and claim one of the available bonuses OR click through to play for free. The deposit amount determines the available bonus. Deposit amounts and bonuses are:
Want to deposit more? The site also offers a custom welcome bonus where you can enter any amount you wish to deposit and they will determine the bonus available to you, up to $1000.
You are also eligible for a cash bonus when you refer a friend. Bonus amount depends on their initial deposit. Additional bonuses are offered on a case-by-case basis depending on the amount of play you have.
How is the bonus released?
Players receive bonus payments at a rate of 4% of each deposit entry fee made. For example, if you pay $100 to enter a contest, then you will receive $4 of your bonus amount automatically.
Can the bonus amount be withdrawn?
Yes. Players may choose to play or cashout their bonus amount as it is released to them.
Does this bonus expire?
The welcome bonus does not have an expiration date. However, additional bonuses offered will have a limit to how long you have to redeem the entire bonus amount. Typically this is 90-days but it varies by bonus offered.
Available promotions change with the season and based on the sports contests that are being offered. For example, during baseball season 2015, players can get over their Monday Blues with Super Tuesday contests like the $85,000 Rally with a meager $5 entry fee or the $180k Chicago Baseball Qualifier that has a $25 entry fee. There are even happy hour promotions to take advantage of from 4pm to 6pm, Monday through Friday. Play any contest marked with HAPPY HOUR and you’ll find special bonuses including entry into upcoming tournaments and up to $1,000 in bonus cash.
Find out what promotions are being offered by clicking on the PROMOTIONS tab in your lobby.
Every time you sign up for a contest, you will earn FanDuel Points. These can be redeemed for entry to contests or help you qualify for monthly freeroll games. There are four levels of games with big prizes which you can qualify for. The $2000 Bronze Freeroll requires 1000 FDPs; the $3500 Silver Freeroll requires 5000 FDPs; the $6500 Gold Freeroll requires 15,000 FDPs; and the $13,000 Platinum Freeroll requires 50,000 FDPs.
Freeroll tournaments are held between the 3rd and 7th of each month. Entry into games is based on the previous months accumulated FanDuel Points.
FanDuel was the brainchild of five businessmen and sports enthusiast in 2009. Two of the founders, Nigel Eccles and Tom Griffiths, are part of the company’s team of 125-people. By June of that year, the site saw its very first paying customer. In September, NFL betting was launched. 2010 saw the start of the several profitable partnerships the company has today with its first being with Philly.com. This partnership led to the site launching 5 and 10 player leagues. Later that year, mega tournaments started to make their way onto the lobby wall with the first being a $50,000 Fantasy Football Championship in December.
In 2011, FanDuel saw the addition of more partnerships which included Sporting News and NBC. This was also the year that they opened their main office in New York City. Basketball was added at the start of the 11-12 season and their Fantasy Football Championship came back for a second year with a prize pool of $200,000. Of course, their first big business achievement was in December 2012 when the company generated its first 1-million dollar month. By 2013, the Fantasy Football Championship had risen to $3,000,000.
But what good is any company if they haven’t gained recognition?
It’s true that we often carry the value of a business based on the accolades it has. Luckily, FanDuel has plenty of those to go around too. A quick list of the awards which they have received include:
In addition to being recognized and awarded by these industry experts, the company was nominated for The Europa’s Best Gaming or Social Games Start-up. Finally, FanDuel has been featured in the New York Times, Yahoo Sports, and Sports Illustrated as well as received mention through TechCrunch, Fox Sports, ESPN, and the Wall Street Journal.
FanDuel.com is a leading contender in the daily fantasy league market. With one of the highest payout amounts each week – over $10,000,000 – it is hard not to want to get in on the action. The user lobby is very easy to navigate and the option to play on a mobile device or tablet makes it easier to bet on the go.
Worried you might not like it? That’s okay – the site offers you a money-back guarantee on the first league bet (up to $100) if you are not satisfied.
Possibly our favorite perk of this site is the affordable contest buy-ins. If you think that you need to bet big to win big – think again. When you become a member, you can choose from a variety of contests, many of which have entry fees as low as $1. Even for a minimal $25, you can gain entry into a $50,000 prize contest. With so much variety and an appeal to even the most budget-conscious players, it’s easy to see why this company has gained such a pristine reputation.
Our experience playing at FanDuel was a knock out of the park. The customer service was outstanding and the user interface was a breeze. The custom bonus option allowed us to get a little more bang for the buck by choosing to deposit more than what was recommended. At the end of the day, winnings were paid out promptly and the seamless mobile app allowed us to check out stats while watching the game. Head on over to FanDuel.com and give daily fantasy leagues a try for yourself!
