Epsom Derby 2017

The first of the traditional Derby trails was run this Saturday when at the home of British racing, CHURCHILL ran out an impressive winner of the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Adian O’Brien, Churchill’s trainer was immediately asked after the race would he be heading to Epsom in June, and his reply was they would look at the all the options over the next week or so.

Distance is usually not a problem to a Galileo,” said O’Brien. “He can go any route. He got a mile well today and you’d say he’d definitely get a mile and a quarter very well. With a mile and a half you’re never sure, but I’d say he could go down a lot of roads”

Jockey Ryan Moore was asked the same question,

Well, look, I mean . . . his daddy won a Derby,” he said, adding: “I doubt there would be a better ride.”

Plenty more will be revealed over the next two weeks with traditional Derby trials the Dee Stakes at Chester coming this week and then the Dante Stakes at York the following week.

Aidan O’Brien will almost definitely have representatives in both those trials and the Coolmore operation who own Churchill will have a better idea of who will be representing them after those races.

The 2000 Guineas as a Derby trial has stood the test of time, and the most recent winner to have achieved the Classic double is CAMELOT in 2012 who was also trained by Adian O’Brien.

Many trainers have yet to unwrap their stars and the next two weeks will make the Derby picture much clearer.

Bookmakers were impressed enough with Churchill’s display on Saturday and have chalked him up as the 7/2 favorite but that does seem an over-reaction as another two solid trials need to be run.

Current Betting
  • CHURCHILL – 7/2
  • CRACKSMAN – 8/1
  • CLIFFS OF MOHAR – 10/1
  • EMINENENT – 10/1
  • BARNEY ROW (Needs to be supplemented) – 12/1

CRACKSMAN is the second favorite in most bookmakers lists and is unbeaten after two runs.

More importantly, he has had experience around the Epsom course.  He took the Investec Derby Trial last month over 2 furlongs short of the Derby trip and that experience around this world famous racecourse will stand him on good stead.

Trainer John Gosden has entered him up for the Dante Stakes at York and should he win that, then he could possibly head Churchill in the Derby betting.

The Dante as a Derby trial is becoming a solid benchmark with Gosden following the Dante/Derby route two years ago with Golden Horn who lifted the Epsom Classic in scintillating style.

Here is a look at the traditional Derby trials and the most recent winners who have gone on to Epsom glory;

  • 2012 – Camelot – WON Epsom Derby

  • 1998 – High Rise – WON Epsom Derby

  • 2003 – Kris Kin – WON Epsom Derby

  • 2002 – High Chaparral – WON Epsom Derby

  • 2015 – Golden Horn – WON Epsom Derby

  • 2013 – Ruler of the World – WON Epsom Derby

Currently there are still 136 entries for the Derby still standing their ground with the next forfeit stage 23rd May.
